Exploring Patterns of New Media CultureSites to Check Out
As I explore the multitude of different ways in which media is now being consumed and processed by society, I will provide readers with websites pertaining to present-day convergence culture as well as those I personally find intriguing or worth spending some time with…
I have found The Free Expression Policy Project to be a wonderful resource for me. I first accessed the site while researching new media and politics and the site covers media policy, the history of censorship, and everything in between. I found the information on this site to be extremely informative, particularly in regards to the challenges that new media face as Jenkins describes within Convergence Culture
I frequently check out the Center for Social Media for news on the future of digital media technologies and the future of a media democracy. This site, which is associated with the Communication’s department at American University, “showcases and analyzes strategies to use media as creative tools for public knowledge and action.”
Despite the fact that I typically do not like to be spoiled in regards to my favorite television programs and do not actively participate in fan communities as I prefer to fully engage in programs for the first time with no prior knowledge as to what’s to come, the recent strike by members of the Writers Guild of America has forced me to reconsider my options. One of my favorite programs, Friday Night Lights is once again in danger of not being renewed for a third season. And worst yet, due to the writer’s strike, which I fully support, I will be missing the last seven episodes of the series. This has made me ponder what would have happened if the series was shot in its entirety and how will the series come to a close.
Forums on Television Without Pity, which has also been referenced by Henry Jenkins, have given me clues as to what to expect throughout the remainder of the series. This website contains similar forums on a number of different programs. But BEWARE – - these may contiain spoilers!
Henry Jenkins references The Dead Media Project within Convergence Culture when discussing how as new technologies are evolving, many others are facing extinction. Despite the contradictions in the fact that it is the technologies that are changing, not the media, I think this websites manifesto is worth taking some time to look at as it pertains to the cultural transformations we are discussing within this course.
